Acting Auditions: The Path to Mastery

Acting Audition

Excellence Is the Goal

George Leonard wrote a classic book called ‘Mastery’ that talks about what the difference is between people that never get good at anything, and those rare individuals that rise to the level of mastery in their chosen craft. One pattern he recognizes among every masterful artist was that they had a long term commitment to regular practice. The question is, how the idea of mastery apply to the art and science of acting auditions.

First things first; set specific auditioning goals that will allow you to maintain a regularity of practice. George Leonard had it easy because he practiced Aikido. He joined a dojo near his home that had a regular schedule of classes and then he settled into practicing three to five times a week. (Perhaps more if you count his solo practice time) When it comes to auditioning though, I’ve noticed that most actors leave it up to chance. You’ll realize, if you take the time to look, that you don’t have to rely entirely on your agent to book auditions. This applies to people early in their acting career. For those of you more advanced I have other suggestions to follow. For those of you relatively early in your acting career, there are a ton of auditions that you can attend for local community theater, student films, musicals, etc. If you’re young, audition for some graduate or undergraduate programs even if you probably wouldn’t go. Just preparing an audition that is good enough to get you into Yale school or drama or NYU’s undergraduate musical theater branch will stretch your audition preparation skills to the limit. As an individual artist you can apply to Shakespeare festivals and submit your headshots at different agencies; even if you already have one. Go read for a different agency, let them know you are just shopping around and thinking perhaps it might be time for a move and you just want to get to meet the other options around town until you could find one that is a great fit. This “audition everywhere you can” idea graduate school audition will work until you actually get in and have to turn it down. This principle of “keep auditioning until you can easily land the part” goes for everything I’ve mentioned. After a certain point you’ll get so good at auditioning that you’ll get 80-90% callbacks to your auditions, you’ll learn to adapt to any situation and learn to do your best work in situations you’d normally resist and resent. Action is the best medicine for incompetence. It always strikes me as funny that we are all “actors” and the one thing that keeps many of us shackled in mediocrity is our inability to take long term committed and focused “action”.

Go to it! Audition everywhere you can!

And remember…

“Consistency, before intensity, is the path to long term mastery and eventually, a legacy!”

James Wagner

PS- if they offer you the part and you don’t want it, be cordial. Tell them that you have to think about it because there are a few other offers on the table right now for that period of time and that you’ll get back to them. If you tell them you’re taking another project offer, not only will they respect that, but your status has just gone up because you are polite, amiable, professional and in demand.

Belly Button Rings Compliment A Great Summer Body

With summer approaching, now is the best time to get your belly button piercing. It’s best to get your piercing healed up before you head outside in the sun.

With summer right around the corner, the hottest trends to help you sizzle include belly button rings. Whether you are beach bound or just enjoy showing off your midriff, they can be an excellent complement to a great body. You worked hard to look good, so it might be time to get that piercing you’ve been hoping for. You may not be aware of it, but it’s actually a really good idea to get your piercing done well before summer hits. You need give it plenty of time to heal before you expose it to ocean or pool water. Bacteria can get in and create a harmful infection. If you do wait until summer to get the piercing, you may want to sit out for the first few weeks while you wait for things to heal.

Another thing you have to be aware of with belly button rings is how easy they can be to snag on clothing. You should avoid purchasing dangling jewelry as it has the greatest potential to snag when you least expect it. You should start out with a simple stud and work your way up to other belly button rings as your piercing heals and you begin to feel more comfortable. You should also avoid wearing tight clothing while things are still healing. This can also make you sweat, which will irritate your healing wound and could lead to infection.

Signs of an infection include redness, swelling and puss drainage. Sometimes these symptoms can also indicate your body rejecting the piercing. If you experience these symptoms and they appear to be worsening, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor. They can usually help you get things cleared up within a few days. If things are getting particularly painful or bad looking, you may need to consider taking out the piercing until you get medical attention.

You Just Have To Love That Classic Muscle Car

They’re tough. They’re masculine. They’re high-performance. Those words often come to mind when one speaks of the classic muscle car. These vehicles are considered some of the finest examples of the time when American automobile production had reached its zenith. The classic muscle car, with its trim design and unusual suitability for drag racing, has attained a fame that has earned it a place as one of the signature vehicle design movements of modern automobile history.

The classic muscle car design is one that does not emphasize power over appearance. Instead, the design embraces both the power of the machine and the aesthetics of the design. These cars have larger engines than conventional automobiles, are bigger than the average sports car, and have a toughness of frame that other types of cars don’t have. The typical definition of what a muscle car is tends to exclude any cars made outside Australia and the US, and even then, only cars made in the years between 1964 to 1973. Among some of the more popular models are the Dodge Charger, the Chevrolet El Camino, and the Plymouth Road Runner.

These machines enjoyed the peak of their popularity in the car market almost immediately after being introduced. They cashed in on the growth of the racing trend among the youth market, which was only an emerging market in terms of spending power at the time. Taking advantage of that trend, the manufacturing companies began to design tougher cars that appealed to the sense of aesthetics that the youth market had and combined it with technical and performance statistics that made them suited for street racing. While, initially, the implementation of the new designs and technical upgrades nearly doubled the costs of the car, many companies eventually developed “budget muscle” models that compromised some of the performance and design aspects in favor of reducing costs. In time, both the classic muscle car and budget muscle car designs were accepted into the market and began to drive their way into the American driver’s psyche.

Sadly, politicians caught on to the trend and effectively killed the classic muscle car by pointing out the inherent dangers of such powerful engines in vehicles being targeted to the youth. Some opponents pointed out the fact that the muscle cars did not have the same braking and turning capacity as other cars and stated that it was a major safety risk. Insurance companies also increased their rates and charges on all high-powered models of automobiles, effectively making any prospective buyers turn away because the muscle cars were out of their budget. For the most part, the makes and models were retired, though some were reinvented as luxury cars instead. Environmental concerns also began to wear away at the power of the muscle car era as control over engine emissions was placed ahead of power and performance as the priority for engine design.

However, there have been some attempts at reviving the original classic muscle car. The Mercury Marauder, the Ford Crown Victoria, and even the Pontiac GTO are considered models intended to recapture the magic of the classic muscle car years. While they have not yet come back with the same force they once had when they originally appeared, reports show that there is still a market for them. Despite sharing the same attacks over environmental concerns that the modern SUVs are getting, manufacturers are still producing limited quantities of the modern muscle cars.

How to Select the Correct Tattoo Machine

Hygiene of a studio, choice of tattoo machines and pigments are a few of the most important facets of tattooing. Of course, to add, you also require a champion craftsman to do a special job on your skin. For a period, you shed all your inhibitions and offer a part of your body to the needlework of a craftsman. It is a great responsibility and only those with an avid sense of duty can fulfill the task well. This brings us back to two most important facets; hygiene and machines.

Hygiene Of The Studio Is A Must

Any studio worth its salt possesses a biohazard container. This helps in eliminating risks attached with objects that have come under the influence of blood or fluids of human body. Hygiene from a studio’s perspective also deals with proper sterilization and cutting down on remote chances of cross contamination; former deals with setting up an Autoclave for sterilizing any equipment or tool being used for tattooing. Next, one needs to shed light on the most important parcel of tattooing; the selection of right machine.

Great Hiatus Between Past Machines And Today’s Tools

Tattoo machines have undergone a sea change since their early days when the engraving device utilized rotary technology for posting electronic impressions. Today, electromagnetic coils are used at large for inserting indelible ink through the epidermal layer down to the dermis. In present times, catapulted by mass demand, tattoo machines are being introduced in various shapes and sizes. A few of them are bent towards an extra yard of shading while a few others give due emphasis to coloring, texturing and implementing right degree of thickness.

Quality Of The Tattoo Gun

As professionals, you must only buy those tattoo machines that have been made from a decent material. For instance, tattoo guns should ideally be made from brass, copper or iron. You must also figure the basic territory of your work. If you are a tattoo parlor that takes pride in its work with “black” or its soft shading, you should go for a typical tattoo gun which should be far different from any other.

Torque Generated Need A Mention

Length of the spring and torque generated by a machine needle is extremely significant aspect of the game too. Some newbie go for a hybrid machine only to find out soon that the calipers degenerate too quickly for their comfort. Their machines also invariably fail to dissipate heat and turn to dust in little time. This commonly happens with inferior machines. This is why it important to make a decent investment in a machine. After all, it provides great value for money. The contact screw and the needles also require a lot of examination prior to being assembled for the machine.

To Conclude

Thankfully, you may not have to buy the machines any more as leasing them has become quite a phenomenon. Concept of equipment leasing had been given a fillip by expanding gymnasiums. Today, it is beautifully incorporated for top-draw tattoo machines too. Do not forget that the needle makes a thousand perforations and more every minute, it cannot do the job well unless it is made of high quality; the same is true for the whole machine.

Online Dating – Gay Dating and Lesbian Dating Will Never be the Same

While the singles life is always full of challenges, it can be particularly challenging for homosexuals looking for love. First, there is the simple reality that people do not usually wear signs announcing their sexual orientation. If you are a woman seeking a woman, how would any other woman know that you are in the market for a girlfriend? Within the realm of social activities, unless someone point blank asks, unattached homosexuals usually do not stand out. (Of course, that is different if it’s specifically a gay event.) You could have a huge crush on a cutie at work or at school, and half the battle of asking her out could be that you don’t know if she even dates women, nor would she know about you.

Second, it can be very frustrating for homosexuals who want a meaningful, committed relationship when it seems that everyone else is just out for a one-night stand. Sure, the physical matters, too, but you want something more. Good luck encountering that soul mate in a bar or at the Exotic Erotic Ball! It can be like the proverbial needle in the haystack. Many lesbians who go to clubs, go there together. If they show up single, how would anyone know they are lesbians?

You can take some of the guesswork out of finding a mate by going online. There are many, many people out there who may want to meet you and may have a lot to offer. Instead of ordering overpriced drinks while pinched into a too-tight corset, they’re sitting at their computers, wondering if someone is out there for them. Services are available that allow you to order up a date that meets your specifications.

There are services that cater to almost any desire. Lesbian dating services [http://lasertargeted.com/datingservices/gay-online-dating-service.html] range from free to paid, from general to specific, from friendship to romance and beyond. The services that require payment will usually offer a free trial period, to make sure the format fits your needs. Most services do enable the general public to surf the ads, but require people to register as members in order to contact people through their ads. How do you decide which service is right for you?

One way to narrow it down, is by your budget. Free on line dating services [http://lasertargeted.com/datingservices/online-dating-free.html] tend to be like ads in the newspaper: you pick out the ones you want to answer, and answer them based on what you see and read in the ad. All the “work” is on you, but that might be just fine.

Paid services sometimes offer more “match-up” services that do some of the work of finding a date, for you. Some ask you to fill out questionnaires describing yourself, and match your characteristics with other participants who have also answered the questionnaire. That way, you already have a sort of compatibility index to begin with. You might also get notified of when a new member enrolls who has characteristics that you are looking for. These paid sites may also enable members to add their voice to their profile, enter live chat rooms, use instant messaging or video, and control who has permission to look at their profile.

With all these dating options available, cruising the bars to meet someone can seem downright medieval. Why not find someone through an online dating service, and hit the town together?

Watercolor Painting Corrections Are Possible!

Many would-be watercolorists shy away from this medium, fearing mistakes cannot be corrected. When painting with oil or acrylics, the paint can be scraped from the canvas and then painted over. When creating art with watercolor, the pigments seep into the watercolor paper, seemingly to stay there forever. Armed with a couple of helpful hints, the fear of watercolor can be removed, allowing the artist to paint in a relaxed and confident manner.

The first thing to consider is which colors are staining colors and which are not. The staining colors include Alizarin Crimson and Winsor Blue, just to name a couple. These colors will not completely “lift” from the paper, whereas the transparent Rose Madder Genuine and Cobalt Blue will. There are many other colors, and their properties, to consider and I recommend practicing with your favorite palette while getting to know which pigments will remove easily and which will not.

The second consideration when discussing making changes to a watercolor, is the use of a good quality watercolor paper. This cannot be stressed enough. There are many brands and weights of paper from which to choose, and I prefer a 140 lb., cold-pressed paper. This is my personal preference and it holds up well to lifting, but experimentation will guide you towards your own favorite. Just don’t use the cheap papers if attempting to lift color. Some of the top layer(s) of the paper will be altered and the lesser papers will not hold up to the scrubbing. You’ll be glad you selected the higher grade of watercolor paper!

Now that you know you will be using non-staining paints and a high caliber watercolor paper, you are ready to experiment with lifting color. Start your trial using an artist’s brush. Dip your brush in clean water and off-load most of it. Then take your brush and go over the area to be altered with circular brush strokes, blotting and checking as you go. If this does not remove all the pigment, switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush and repeat this process using a gentle, circular motion. Continue to blot and check your work as you proceed.

Once the corrected area has dried, try repainting this spot. If the surface of the paper has not ben altered too much, it will readily accept the new paint. Careful and cautious lifting will leave the area more intact. Hard scrubbing can result in going all the way through the paper leaving a hole. So give it a try. It will be fun and you will build confidence in yourself as a watercolorist.

I think because of the nature of the shows, one is a hard-hitting drama and the other is a comedy… And also, so yeah, that, and they’re so different… On ‘Mad Men,’ to me, in my experience, it’s just very focused. We all have such a great respect for the work and the writing and everything, and for each other and everybody that’s working on the show that there is this kind of quiet intensity on set. And everybody’s so nice and good-hearted, but it’s just that the material is so heavy.”

The series centers on Jeff Winger (played by Joel McHale) a disbarred lawyer attending Greendale Community College after he is caught out for falsifying his law degree. She thoroughly enjoys her role on Community admitting to listening to music from the show on her way to work, “I’m such a jerk to other people sitting in traffic going to these jobs that they hate, and I’m like “I love my job! I’m so happy to go to work! We’re just having the best time.” I love these people, we all felt instantly connected after we shot the pilot, and now after five months of working together I think we feel even closer. It’s amazing”.

Quantrill’s Raid on Olathe, Kansas, September 6, 1862

William Quantrill (1837-1865) was a Confederate sympathizer and guerrilla fighter during the Civil War, roaming the plains of Kansas, which had joined the Union as a free state in 1861, and Missouri, a slave-owning state. He was not recognized by the Confederacy as an officer, and many of his men, including Frank and Jesse James, and Cole and Jim Younger, became outlaws after the war ended. The anti-slavery forces were known as jayhawkers, and many of them were equally predatory in their treatment of Kansas settlers.

Confederate raider William Quantrill led his band of 140 men out of Missouri and into Kansas. His purpose was to terrorize the citizens who were Union supporters and to resupply his troops. On the night of September 6-7, 1862, they rode into the small town of Olathe near the Kansas-Missouri border and attacked the town. Men broke into houses, stealing money and valuables along with another more unusual item-photos of pretty young women. Quantrill was known to have a fondness for these, and few were left in towns after his raids.

One of Quantrill’s main targets, of course, was horses. A resident of nearby Spring Hill who was caught up in the Olathe raid had the courage to protest the taking of his horse. Hiram Blanchard tried to pull his bay mare away from a raider and paid for his bravery with his life. The raider blew off the top of Blanchard’s head with his shotgun, leaving the bloody body in the street. Two more men were shot and killed by Quantrill’s men before the troop galloped off to the east. Pack horses, loaded down with loot, and stolen horses followed along behind.

The next morning, Olathe residents discovered more horror. The bodies of three young men, recent enlistees in the 12th Kansas Infantry, were found. Frank Cook and the Judy brothers, John and James, had been shot down in cold blood by Quantrill’s men. Frank Cook was taken from his father-in-law’s house and made a prisoner. His body was found not far away in a ravine with two bullet holes in his chest and his head crushed by a cannon ball. The raiders ransacked the Judy house, taking the enlistees as prisoners. John Judy’s wife headed for her neighbor’s as soon as the raiders had left, but she heard the gunshots that killed her husband and brother-in-law as she hurried along the road. John Judy was shot in the eye and twice in the chest, and his brother was shot once in the face and once in the chest. The bodies of the Judys were found on the nearby Millikan farm.

Although the attack on Olathe was largely overshadowed by Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence, Kansas, on August 21, 1863, where 180 men and boys were killed, it symbolized the dangers of living on the prairies at that time. Kansas justly earned the unhappy name of “Bleeding Kansas” before and during the Civil War.

William Quantrill, a Confederate guerrilla fighter during the Civil War, directed a violent attack on the town of Olathe, Kansas, on the night of September 6-7, 1862. Six men were killed during the looting of the defenseless town: three civilians and three newly-recruited soldiers.
